During the week of July 6-12, Hawaii Island police arrested 20 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, five; Puna and South Kohala, three each.
So far this year, there have been 533 DUI arrests compared to 647 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.6 percent.
There have been 790 major accidents so far this year compared to 837 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.6 percent.
So far this year, there have been 13 official traffic fatalities compared to eight during the same period last year, an increase of 62.5 percent.
To date, eight of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — five to drugs, and three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
